A closer, more detailed look at these two villages will illustrate that Northbrook is more densely populated than Northfield with the cities maintaining relative populations of approximately 33,000 and 4,500 residents, respectively.
The Village of Northbrook combines a strong diversification of employment in industry, commercial and office development with its residential, educational, recreational and cultural amenities. The result is a thriving local economy with first-class services for both its businesses and residents. Furthermore, Northbrook is able to provide a high level of government services while maintaining a relatively low municipal tax rate because of the Village’s broad based source of revenue. Alternatively, the Village of Northfield is primarily a residential community with very little in terms of local services and amenities. However, its close proximity to Northbrook and other larger area villages enables its residents to benefit from outside resources without having to travel very far from home.
This region north of Chicago provides residents with a constant reminder of how surreal the world is when nature is not disturbed by industry. The Northbrook Park District is listed as one of the top reasons families desire to move to this suburban Chicago community. In fact, the District has won many national and statewide awards for its programs and activities. The District was also the first park district in the United States to be accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association.
The parks within Northbrook serve as a community gathering point where various cultures and traditions pleasantly blend into one. Together, the parks combine to offer a full performing arts program as well as a comprehensive visual arts program. There is an early childhood and preschool center along with an extensive network of before and after school programs scattered throughout the Village, supporting children from all neighborhoods. There are two outdoor aquatic centers as well as a nationally recognized figure skating program for tomorrow’s potential world-class athletes. There are also numerous athletic and fitness sporting leagues for people of all ages and skill levels to join in addition to three golf courses and a cycling Velodrome. For senior citizens, the park district has established a senior enrichment program with weekly activities. All in all, the parks afford residents a safe place to learn and play while aesthetically enhancing the overall appearance of the Village and its many surrounding communities.
Fortunately, local residents do not have to wander far from home to find exquisite cuisine, regional entertainment, and enthusiastic nightlife within this ever-growing economy. However, when occasion calls for recreation on a grander scale, Chicago and all its excitement is just a short drive away down Route 94. Home to the Chicago Bulls, Cubs and Bears, steakhouses, rib joints and nightclubs, Chicago is the cure for the boredom blues. So, whether one ventures into the city to attend a sporting event, see the opera, shop or dine, the task is an easy one to accomplish with little fuss. This convenience makes such a trip enjoyable and is one of the many reasons why living within the communities of Northbrook and Northfield is satisfying to their residents.
If convenience, mixed with an impeccable school system, a comprehensive and diverse job market, a superior parks and recreation department, and a highly developed public transportation network sounds attractive, then the villages of Northbrook and Northfield may just be the right places for you and yours to call home.
